About this site
ByzCathFamilyMatters.com had its beginnings with a regularly featured insert in the bulletin of Saint Thomas the Apostle Byzantine Catholic Church in Rahway, New Jersey written by family psychologist Thomas P. Shubeck, PhD. In 2003 the Byzantine Catholic Family Matters column became a regular feature in the Eastern Catholic Life newspaper of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic. Enthusiastic response led to the creation of ByzCathFamilyMatters.com which made its debut in January 2004.

A message from founder and director Dr. Thomas P. Shubeck:
Welcome to ByzCathFamilyMatters.com! I hope that you find this website both informative and fun to browse through. As a Byzantine Catholic who happens to be a family psychologist, I perceived the need for a center for the dissemination of information on marriage and family life from a uniquely Catholic perspective. The Holy Father John Paul II implores Catholic Christians to look to the East, that to be truly Catholic, The Church must breathe with both lungs, Eastern and Western. Virtually all of the resources on marriage and family life in the Catholic Church have been written or produced from a western Roman perspective. At ByzCathFamilyMatters.com we bring together the teachings of the Church - from both East and West. Most of the recent contributions on marriage and family life in the East have come from our Orthodox brothers and sisters and are presented here. Go to the Virtual Bookstore for a complete list of titles that are available.
Finally, I am happy to offer my visitors the opportunity to discuss pressing individual, marital and family issues by way of telephone based counseling (tele-counseling). Whether the issue is a major life transition or decision, parenting concerns, depression, marital conflict, loss, serious illness, or any of a myriad of issues, I am here to help. For more information about these services and my professional training and experience, go to The Tele-Counseling Center.
